GP Koirala’s era marks beginning of modernisation: leader Mahat

Surkhet : Nepali Congress leader and former Finance Minister Dr Ramsharan Mahat said the period of former Prime Minister the late Girija Prasad Koirala marked the beginning of modernisation in Nepal.

During the party cadres’ meeting at Birendranagar, the capital of Karnali province today, leader Mahat claimed it is the NC, especially party former President and Prime Minister Koirala (who served four times), had built a base for development in the country.

"The NC was in the government when the country was going through the 10-year-armed conflict and in such adverse situation also, the country was developed due to a strong policy of the NC."

He went on to say the NC is the party which believes in pluralism and it is moving ahead as per the spirit of socialism. The constructions of 85,000 cemented and gravel roads, the increase in revenue collection from Rs 92 billion to Rs 900 billion, expansion of health facilities to the then 4,000 VDCs and supply of irrigation facility to 1.6 million hectares of land were the achievements of the then NC-led government.

Party another leader Dr Chandra Bhandari argued the ideological horizon of the NC is not limited just as a political party, instead it is a political school. As he said though the party weakened due to its leadership, the development of country by communists could not be expected.
