RJPN obstructs parliament meeting

Kathmandu : Lawmakers of the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) have stalled the meeting of the House of Representatives, the lower house of Federal Parliament today, calling for making the Lal Commission report public.

The government had formed an investigation commission under the chairmanship of former judge of the Supreme Court Girish Chandra Lal to probe the Tharu movement and the Madhes movement that took place in 2015.

Soon after Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara announced the starting of the meeting, RJPN lawmakers stood up from their seats in protest.

Following this, Speaker Mahara allotted time to RJPN lawmaker Ani Kumar Jha to make a statement.

Jha on the occasion demanded that Speaker Mahara issue a ruling to the government to make the Lal Commission's report public in the next meeting of the House.

"Our party has been consistently demanding to make the Lal Commission's report public and the Speaker had also issued a ruling to the government for the same before this. But the government has not given any heed to this. Rather it is dillydallying on this matter," Jha said.

He said the facts and truth behind the Tikapur incident would have been known, and who committed mistakes and injustices would also be known had the government made the report public. Jha also alleged the government of trying to hide the truth by not releasing the report.

Disobeying the Parliament Speaker's ruling is to neglect the parliamentary supremacy, he explained.

The RJPN lawmakers continued their protect standing at their seats even after Jha's statement and the Speaker said the government has taken the topic of making the report public positively, adding that the government has sought some time to study the report.

RJPN lawmakers continued the protest prompting the Speaker to postpone the meeting for 10 minutes. The House of Representatives meetings have been obstructed by RJPN lawmakers three times before this also over the same issue.
